Jonathan Swift was a well educated man and still today, he is considered to be one of the great writers of his time. He was born at No. 7 Hoeys court in Dublin, Ireland. He had a very unusual and sad childhood, partly due to the fact that his Irish born father died of unknown causes seven months before he was born. Swift's uncle Godwin proved himself to be a devoted guardian, sending him to Kilkenny College. After he went to Kilkenny, Swift attended Dublin University in 1682. At Dublin University, he received his B.A. and although he began studying for his master’s degree, he did not receive it due to political troubles. Later, however, he did receive an M.A. from Hertford College, Oxford. In February of 1702, Swift received his Doctor of Divinity degree from Trinity College, Dublin.
Swift lived in the sixteen and seventeen hundreds. Although the period Swift lived in held many horrible events, such as the plague and rampant spread of various diseases, these events shaped much of Swift's writing that we still treasure today.
